Demos and unreleased tracks

On this page we’ll be adding some songs from David’s archive. We’ll be featuring both unreleased music and demos of familiar songs.

Obedience – Dyble / Longdon instrumental demo

I found this in David’s back up drive, a demo for the song Obedience from the Dyble / Longdon album.

This House – Live at Wirksworth Festival 2004

Here’s a track from the same show as the bonus tracks on the reissue of Wild River. This was the launch show for the original release of the album in 2004.

The Dreams of Harry Beck

Dreams of Harry Beck was recorded in 1997 at David’s home studio in the spare room at his place in Nottingham. Music and lyrics – about the slightly obsessive designer of the iconic London Underground diagram – by myself. I played keyboards and double bass, and David provided vocals and guitar and engineered. I remember David sweating over the lead line, which has a somewhat Canterbury-esque shape that would be easier as an instrumental line than as a vocal – but as ever with David, the result was superb. I think it was that same weekend that he played me a tape of some of his Genesis audition vocals, sung over the original classic backing tracks. I remember that it was almost spooky how well he’d been able to emulate both Peter Gabriel’s and Phil Collin’s voices. I wish we’d collaborated more as a duo, but I’m glad we at least put down this one song. Danny Manners

Forgive (But Not Forget) Instrumental Demo

This demo was recorded on the 17th October 2019 for David’s own use and presumably to send to Patrick Phillip, Door One producer.

France version one -Dyble / Longdon

This is a demo presumably sent to Judy Dyble for France which was included on the Dyble / London album.

Wake Up Call

This demo is from 2008 and was found in David’s archive from an abandoned album he was working on called Time and Tide.

April Fool

Here’s a demo of the song April Fool which would appear on David’s album Wild River

Hieroglyphics of Love

Here’s a great version of Hieroglyphics of Love from David’s band The Gifthorse. This track dates back to 1991. Producer and Gifthorse guitarist Gary Bromham has very kindly remastered this version for the website.

Rock Logic

Another track from The Gifthorse, this time from 1992.

Pianoish

This is a demo from 2018 cowritten with Nick D’Virgillio which would eventually become the backbone of Theodora in Green and Gold.
